LitPick Review
This story takes place near Summerset in England. At first, the landscape is described as dark and inhospitable, but as the main character, seventeen-year-old Liam explores the countryside, he begins to see its beauty.
Liam is from London and lives an unhappy life. His parents are busy people and don’t have time for him. He gets in with the wrong crowd and in trouble with the law. At this same time, his mother gets very ill and is hospitalized. Liam is sent to Mendip Hills to live with his aunt, uncle, and their blind daughter June. Liam can’t read, but he can draw. His aunt and uncle encourage him and he begins to make money with his drawings. He saves his money to buy a motorbike as he has always wanted. During this time, Liam is hunted by dreams of his friend in London, Ash.
When June comes home for school for the summer, weird things start to happen. Liam and June encounter ghosts from the past, hippies start camping in numbers on the hill behind the Mineries by the house, and bike shops can’t keep motorbikes in stock since they sell out so quickly. What does this have to do with Liam and June, and where does Ash fit into the picture?
Opinion:
I enjoyed this tale of modern troubled youth meets old myths and legends. It was masterfully woven and well written. Chris Lewando obviously put time into researching the Summerset area and the legends that surround it. The Author introduces the old stories well and gives their meaning a modern twist that flows seamlessly with the tales. The characters are believable and well portrayed. I found myself rooting for Liam’s success on many levels. Bravo!
