LitPick Review
The third installment in Lisa McMann’s series about the magic of creativity; The Unwanteds ; Island of Fire is a tale of doing whatever it takes to help your friends when they’re in trouble. Alex Stowe finds himself in the position of leader of the people of the realm of Artimé in the aftermath of Mr. Today’s death. Confused, and with absolutely no idea how to do all the things he knows need doing, Alex must find a way to restore Artimé to its former glory and save Lani and Samheed from a distant island. Without the guidance of many of his former mentors, Alex must trust a pair of silent strangers to lead him to the answer. However, his twin brother, Aaron, is raising the forces of Quill and planning to destroy the people of Artimé once and for all. Alex struggles to achieve balance and security, while Aaron attempts to exert power over a nation that is beginning to die. Aaron’s curiosity and Alex’s desperate adventures lead them both to the individual conclusion tat they may not be each other’s worst threat.
Opinion:
I loved it. Lisa McMann continues to weave her magic in a way that is both strange and touching. The intricate plot held my attention the entire way through. However, this tale isn’t just a riveting adventure. It’s also a story of heartfelt emotions. I really felt close to these characters, and believed I was living through these acventures with them. At times, I wanted to cry; other parts made me laugh, sigh, mentally cheer on the characters (does anyone else do that?), and just collapse from desperation. A beautiful tale of the true meaning of loyalty and friendship, this tale will not soon be forgotten. I eagerly await the next chronicle in the Unwanteds sequence, and expect the best is yet to come!
