LitPick Review
The Taste of Snow is a book about an ordinary eleven-year-old girl named Nicole Kinders. At least she was an ordinary girl, until one day, on her way to school, she bought a magic candy cane. On her way back from school the same day, she found that a tiny piece of the candy cane had cracked off inside of the plastic wrapping. She decided to test if the candy cane really was magic by eating that little piece. Instantly she was hit by a flare of peppermint flavor that she hadn't experienced before. She also started seeing things brighter than they usually appeared. But from that day forward, bad incidents started to happen to her and the people around her. Will she find out how to stop these incidents or will they just turn out to be really bad luck? Find out in this amazing adventure!
Opinion:
The Taste of Snow is a light-hearted adventure with a little magic mixed in. I really liked the overall story along with the characters as individuals. I also liked how the author, Stephen V. Masse, brought into the book some actual Austrian elements like Krampus, who is the dark companion of St. Nicholas, and Kiachl (KEYuh-kul), a sort of fried bread. A part in the book that I really liked was when Nicole‘s dad told a story about snow tasting like peppermint, chocolate, etc. depending on where you were in the world. If you like characters to overcome their problems, this book is for you. I think that boys and girls ages eleven through seventeen would most enjoy this book.
