Harmony, the main character of Enlightened, has lived multiple lives throughout many different centuries. She references Earth as her school and repeatedly visits it to learn useful skills she can apply to her next life. When one life is over, she returns to heaven or "home" and prepares for her next life.

Harmony's last few lives ended before they were meant to, and no one knows why. Harmony can only find one common link to her deaths and that’s Kaleb. Kaleb has appeared in every life in which Harmony has died early. With the help of her Spirit-Guide and her friends, Harmony must find out why she continues to die early and she must do it before her next life on Earth.

Opinion:

I truly enjoyed Enlightened. It is easy reading that holds the reader's interest throughout the story. This book promotes relaxed reading and does not require a great deal of concentration to follow the story line. The manner in which the story develops, however, is a bit confusing upon the initial read. But as the story progresses, it becomes easier to understand.

I liked meeting the characters as the story evolves. Harmony and Kaleb’s classmates are all so different yet bonded as a family. I could tell how close they are and how much they mean to each other. I do wish the author had given these side characters greater roles in the story. They are all so unique, so I would love to learn more about Harmony’s relationships with them, especially her friend Gwen.

In the narrative are flashbacks of Harmony’s previous lives on Earth. These flashbacks appear to take place in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although I loved learning about Harmony’s past lives, I was a bit confused as the language felt untrue to the time periods. I did, though, really enjoy trying to figure out which past characters are her current classmates.

One component of this book I struggled with is the manner in which the romance evolvess. It comes off as very sappy and is presented as one prolonged scene. I feel the author would have greater impact had the romance developed more gradually and were less “gooey.” One other suggestion I feel would enhance this book is to lessen use of the word “enlightened,” which is used so frequently that it is actually disruptive to the story flow.

Overall, Enlightened is a good book. I found myself growing attached to the characters and looking forward to the ongoing story line as the plot evolves. Despite my constructive feedback as noted above, I actually look forward to reading another book in this series.

Content Rating:

Content rating - some mature content

Explain your content rating:

This book is relatively clean compared to most young adult novels. Intimacy is shared between characters, but it does not extend beyond kissing and emotion. In one scene a character goes to a bar and declines alcohol when offered, but that is the only other reference to mature content. I recommend this book for ages 13+.
