LitPick Review
The Fire Wish is a book about a girl named Zayele and a jinni named Najwa that end up switching places. Zayele lived in a small tribe named Zab, until the Vizier came. He said he was searching for a wife for the prince and that he was going to choose her. So, although she was against it with everything she had, her parents forced her, along with her cousin, to travel to Baghdad. On the last day of the three day journey, though, a jinni named Najwa appears. Since the creation of jinnis, there was a universal rule that if a human gets close enough to touch a jinni it must grant them one wish. If the wish is refused, intense pain starts clawing at the jinni's insides until the wish is granted. So, even though there is a war between the jinni race and the humans, Zayele wishes for a two-part wish. The first is for Najwa to take her place as a wife for the prince. The second is for Najwa to send Zayele home. Najwa grants the wish, but something goes wrong with it and Zayele ends up in the jinni cavern. Will Zayele ever get home? Will Najwa be discovered as a jinni and get killed? Find out for yourself in this incredible book!
Opinion:
The Fire Wish was a really great book. Before I requested The Fire Wish I hadn't realized it was a romance, but to me it didn't feel like a romance. Instead, it felt like an action book. The author, Amber Lough, did a really good job with the unique descriptions. For example, she described one of the character’s voices as being like sandpaper on another‘s nerves. It almost felt like the author was taking me on a journey, even though the descriptions got overly wordy at times. The characters were so well developed that I couldn‘t choose just one favorite. Something I didn’t like about the book, though, was at the beginning, it felt like I was thrown into the story and there was a little bit missing. Granted, it did explain it eventually, but it took a while to clarify the background. I would recommend this book to girls ages twelve through sixteen because there is some blood, death, a little bit of romance. Boys willing to look past the little bit of romance that the book has, or don't mind it, would probably enjoy the action, also. Be warned -- this is a series, and it will leave you hanging at the end!
