Growing Up

This is a very sweet and simple children's book that teaches readers how to recognize and express feelings. It covers a range of basic emotions, even addressing a few a child might have yet to discover. Each emotion in this book is given an example with which children can easily relate.

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi is a book that is centered around two main characters, Penny and Sam, who, through unusual circumstances, are thrown together in Austin, TX.  Penny is starting her first year of college at the University of Texas while running away from everything she left at home. Sam is taking a break from college and feels stuck in a poor situation of no real home, his job, and being stuck on his ex-girlfriend.

Uh Oh Kenzo! is a picture book about a little goat named Kenzo, who keeps on making mistakes. The book takes the reader through a day of Kenzo's life when things keep going wrong at home and at school. At home, Kenzo spiills oatmeal all over his brother's favorite shirt. During art class, he tries to hid his painting but instead knocks a can of paint over, ruining his painting and his friend's. Mishaps likes like this keep happening, making Kenzo feel like he is not a good kid. He needs some help understanding that accidents happen and that it's okay!

As a young girl, Claudia is brilliant, consuming the works of Plato and Aristotle while other children are still learning their letters. She is the daughter of the last Delphi, an oracle from Greek mythology. Her betrothed, Lucius, is a fierce yet forgiving soldier of the Roman army, well connected enough to secure a leadership role over the Jews in Jerusalem.

Greg O'Brien, a gifted college student and also a part-time employee at McDonald's, is devastated when his high-school sweetheart, Rosalyn, cheats on him at the end of the school year and leaves him for some rich guy.

Everyone gets a little curious sometimes. When the little girl in this story sees a little boy who looks sad, she decides to cheer him up. But first, she tries to find out why he is upset. So, with all the charm of a concerned little girl, she goes through every possible scenario that could possibly be making him sad. The Curious Club captures the spirit of curious kids everywhere, with imaginative rhyme and colorful pictures by illustrator Mike Motz.

The Curious Club is a book about a girl who is...well, curious. She sees a boy who is sad, and she is concerned. She goes over to him to ask why he is so sad. She also asks him a variety of other questions—some serious, some silly—but all show that she cares. The boy says she is very curious, and she tells him she likes to learn about everything. She asks the boy if he wants to join her club, and he says yes.

Most notably, she writes about the advanced education of girls in their Muslim community, and the Christian customs that trickle in and influence their evolving viewpoints.

I’m Feeling is a picture book about characters who express how they feel as they go through different emotions. They not only demonstrate emotions but also explain how to fix those that are negative, such as sadness, anger, or frustration, without taking it out on others. It includes a fun coloring project, as well as multiple activities through which the reader can express his or her feelings by doing arts-and-craft activities. The book also features a cut-out activity, through which the reader cuts out faces to show different feelings.
