Summer of Elves is a book about a girl named Aly who just turned twelve.  It is summer vacation and she is looking forward to spending time with her friends along with working in her grandma's garden.  Aly will be helping out in the garden to earn some spending money.  On one of her first days working for her grandma, she sees a rustle among the leaves and seeds she is picking up.  At first she ignores the rustle, but when it continues, she calls her grandmother over to investigate.  What Aly at first thought to be a lizard or snake turns out to be a creature Aly never knew existed before.  As she works in the garden all summer, she learns about more supposedly mythical creatures, and is taught by her grandmother to be a Guardian of the Light Elves.  Now that she is twelve, her powers are awakening.  From that day forward Aly sees mythical creatures galore.  What happens next?  Read Summer of Elves yourself to find out!

Opinion:

In my opinion, Summer of Elves was a really great book.  I liked that the author, Joanne Vruno, made the characters easy to connect with; the descriptions and characteristics Joanne gave the characters were captivating.  One of my favorite parts in the book was when Aly was learning to use her various powers.  I also felt that her take on elves was really interesting because I usually picture them at around six feet tall or so, but in this book they are very tiny.  This book has a hint of Fablehaven and Spiderwick Chronicles combined. The only problem I had with this book was that it wouldn't let me go to sleep; I wanted to keep reading the whole night!   I would recommend this book to anyone who likes magic, mystery, and adventure.  I would definitely read the sequel!
