Teleported millions of light years away from home to a planet that wasn’t supposed to be inhabited, six high school students have less than a month to find their family members and find the way off this foreign planet. While the Gnome King’s army hunts for the prophesied Paladin, who they suspect is one of the “Earthlanders,” the six teenagers struggle to figure out their place in this strange new world that seems like it came straight out of medieval history books.

Since he arrived, Jeremy has been told he’s the Paladin, and that he has a special role to fill in a battle he doesn’t understand, with powers he can’t fully control. Used to being the most important person in the room, Alex has to adjust to a world where he is proclaimed useless and must decide whether to accept his fate or fight to be something more. The constantly-bullied underdog on Earth, Leo isn’t surprised when he’s overlooked once more, but he’s determined not to ever be cast aside again. Selene may be thought of as “empty-headed” and “ditzy” on Earth, but now she’s unlocking hidden talents and realizing that she can make a big difference in the lives of those around her. Marissa has always been an outsider but has never minded, in fact she liked it better that way, but now as she watches the boy she’s been crushing on for years fall for someone else and dealing with the shame of blacking out at the slightest hint of danger, she feels more on the outside than ever. Last but not least, Patrick fights to hold on to the last reminder of his father and the only thing that can help him find their missing families.

They didn’t come to start a war, but they better adjust quickly, because for better or for worse, they will determine the fate of this world.

Opinion:

I really enjoyed this book. In the beginning, I was a little put off by the high number of characters, but the author did a very good job making each character uniquely memorable. I could really see each character’s development throughout the book, which I liked a lot. While this is the second book in the series, the background was very well-explained so readers can jump straight in if they choose. While this book may be a little too violent for younger readers, the battle scenes aren’t overdone and are great for older readers. I loved the combination of medieval knights, magic, and modern technology, and felt they blended together very well to bring the world to life. Finally, the twists and turns kept me on my toes and left me unable to put the book down.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy medieval fantasy or like a book with betrayals and big reveals.
