Discovering Ace Stewart by Patrick Stewart is a heart-swelling read into the archives of baseball history. Baseball is a game of strategy, stamina, and stats. Stewart has them all here. Patrick’s great-grand uncle Asa “Ace” Stewart loved baseball, knew baseball, and to Patrick, was baseball in many ways. Ace Stewart was a tenacious and skilled baseball player in an era long before modern major league complexities. The game was less complicated, the players a little grittier, and the opportunity to play took a little more toll on the players themselves. This saga into history’s secret treasures all begins with Patrick Steward himself, at the plate, ready to swing for greatness, only to get smacked in the head with the ball and go down. The read it a delightful look at a section of Stewart’s family tree, but it is also a story of triumph through hard work - for both Ace and Patrick. Both men contributed to the great sport of baseball in their own way, making great friends (and maybe a few enemies) along the way.

Opinion:

Discovering Ace Stewart by Patrick Stewart is a great book for kids, especially kids who enjoy baseball and a little bit of history. Ace Stewart is probably not super well-known, although he did play at least a couple of games against Cy Young! One striking thing about all the history is to read all the other names of the players along with Ace’s experiences and to realize how many men have played baseball in America over all the decades and throughout all the leagues. It is amazing! Stewart’s historical details are carefully researched and the story flows well. Both Ace and Patrick teach us something about life, too: life isn't always a win, but with hard work and a good heart, it is always joyful.  Highly recommended!
