Sticky Icky Vicky - Courage Over Fear is a picture book about a little girl named Vicky who loves to be sticky and icky and gross. She hates baths! However, there is a reason that Vicky avoids baths. She fears water because she had a scary experience. Throughout the picture book, Vicky is challenged to overcome her fear of water and go swimming with her friends. She struggles with courage because she has a negative voice speaking to her named Ned. Vicky is constantly told that she can’t conquer her fears, so will she succeed? How will she overcome this fear? Will it be worth it?

Not only do the authors incorporate charming rhymes into the text of the story, but they also align the words with the illustrations. When Vicky is sticky throughout the book, the illustrations depict a little girl covered in interesting substances. When Vicky is struggling with facing her fears, the illustrations show Vicky in a distressed state. The illustrations perfectly encapsulate the story flowing through the picture book as well as the lively characters. Vicky is a realistic character for readers to experience because she feels fear, courage, doubt, and joy just like any reader would. The authors chose a perfect model for readers to laugh at, mimic, and analyze. Vicky’s journey showcases strong lessons and themes for readers to experience. This picture book demonstrates the importance and power of self-confidence and positivity. After reading this book, readers will realize that they too can conquer any fear if they are confident, positive, and kind to themselves!
