Roses in the Dragon Den is a book following Karina, Charlie, and their estranged uncle, Diego Rosas, on their incredible journey through another world. After seven years, the twins, Karina and Charlie, are meeting their famous, survival-expert-extraordinaire uncle for only the second time in their lives. Their memories of uncle Diego are warm ones, where they would be enraptured with Diego's tales about dragons. Diego is going to celebrate his birthday with his nephew and niece in Switzerland, where they are going to ski and eat Swiss chocolate. Unfortunately, on the train to Switzerland, they hear an explosion, and suddenly the train is derailed. After flipping a few times, all three of them suddenly lose consciousness.

When the twins wake up, they're somewhere unexpected: a place with green as far as they can see and rolling hills surrounding them. Afraid, the twins believe they got thrown out of the train while it was flipping, so they go looking for the train and their uncle. After some time, the twins stumble upon the train, but mysteriously no one seems to be on board! Everyone's luggage is still there, but they can't find a single person on board. After coming to the last compartment, the twins finally find their uncle Diego alive.

Now, with no idea where they are, the group goes looking for any sign of civilization, but suddenly, a dragon appears out of nowhere! The dragon attacks the group and takes away their uncle Diego! Now, armed with nothing but some equipment, Charlie's phone, and their wills, the twins must overcome seemingly impossible obstacles to try and find their uncle and make it back to Earth. Will Karina and Charlie be able to find their uncle or will they fail? How can they possibly deal with a living, breathing dragon!? Find out in this thrilling tale!

Opinion:

I love reading the books that Jacob Devlin writes. All of his books are captivating, and it's very easy to get lost in the books for hours. This book is no exception, and I cannot wait to see what comes next in this series. This series doesn't really bring anything new to the "other world" genre, but what it does bring to the table are vivid battles and some heart-wrenching scenes. With such vivid imagery, it's not hard to see why I enjoyed this book so much. It's the first book in the series and it already has me hooked! The characters are relatable and there are just enough fantasy elements to capture fantasy-lovers' hearts. I would recommend this book to anyone ages 10 and up and those who enjoyed reading series such as Christopher Paolini's Eragon or Chris Colfer's The Land of Stories.
