LitPick Review
Moving to New York City after a painful breakup seems like the best plan of action for Emily Brown in Miss Brown’s Christmas by author Robert A. Valle. Besides having a new place to live in one of the busiest of cities, Emily takes a librarian position at New York Public Library and loves what she does. She knows this is what she wants for now, and in time, hopefully everything else will find a resolution for her. But it’s Christmastime, and she has no plans for the holiday because she’s staying away from her parents who live in Pennsylvania. Interestingly enough, she does have her eye on a handsome library patron named Tim, but their conversations always revolve around simple talk and nothing seems to come to fruition after each meeting. Since Christmastime is a time of love, good cheer, and warm tidings, can Emily and Tim get past their nerves and see if there is something more than just a spark flickering between these two? Can these two lonely souls be the perfect match for each other?
Opinion:
The author did a wonderful job creating his characters to be so believable that I wanted to become personal friends with both Emily and Tim. I loved how they were both shy and reserved. They took their time trying to get to know each other first as Tim visited the library with the intention of seeing Emily and trying to learn more about her. Each encounter made them realize they were attracted to each other, but who would make the first move to start the ball rolling?
I also loved how the author skillfully described the different scenes throughout the book which made me feel as if I was there seeing everything firsthand. While in the library, I felt I was in one of the wooden chairs watching interactions between Emily and Tim. When Mr. Valle described the newly fallen snow, I could feel the chill in the air as I walked beside both characters as they did their normal routines. He did a remarkable job describing his characters, the scenes, and the overall holiday feelings most people feel during Christmastime. When I closed my eyes, I was right there in New York City seeing, hearing, feeling, and smelling the seasonal offerings just as Emily and Tim were.
One thing I really wanted to commend the author about was how he wrote this to be a feel-good holiday story that readers can really enjoy. I fell in love with both Emily and Tim, and since it was Christmastime, I wanted the magic of the holiday season to fill both their hearts. I give this a 5 out of 5, and I highly recommend it to be enjoyed any time of year.
