LitPick Review
One day Bubba received a magic shovel as a gift. His older sister, Squirt, teased him about about it, so he said he would dig a hole right to China. And he did. Bubba and Squirt fell down this hole, and when they got back home, they covered it with sticks and leaves. Bubba and Squirt speak with their grandfather who tells them about aluxes and their magic great-great-grandfather. Then they fall to Belize. They meet Ezperanza and are enlisted to help her father excavate a pyramid and stop the thieves who have been stealing artifacts.
Opinion:
Bubba and Squirt's Mayan Adventure works wonderfully as an early middle grade book. The text is engaging, and the author manages to capture the relationshp between an older sister and younger brother perfectly. The book is informative about the Mayan culture, and the little bits of Spanish sprinkled throughout the book were used well. I recommend this to any young early Spanish learners. There is mostly English, so it works as a great way to expand vocabulary, and the Spanish is interwoven with the English in a way it is extremely easy to discern in context. Bubba and Squirt make comical narrators and keep the reader engaged the entire time. This book is perfect for children who are just about to move onto their first chapter books.
