When the Thompson family moves into the mansion they inherited from Robert’s relative, the lawyer had played up that the house had such quaint charm that they thought they were making the right decision by moving into it. When they arrive, they are beside themselves at just how rundown the outside and inside really are. Everything about the place is rundown and needs desperate repairs. What they aren’t aware of is that the house also comes with an older cat in tow named Whiskers. He even looks like he could use some care. Having already let go of their rental house, they have nowhere else to call home. So they decide to make the best of it and do the best they can to call it home. But something isn’t right about the overall vibe of the house. Plus they find out that the community refers to this as the “Haunted Hall” house. The name comes from all the crazy things that are rumored to have happened in the house over the years. What are the rumors the community is talking about? Where does Whiskers fit into the overall picture?
Opinion:
I must say that this was an extremely fun story for me to read as an adult reviewer, so I know that younger readers will be just as entertained. I really enjoyed learning about the history of the house and how it played so importantly in the community. People were still talking about the numerous crazy things the house was known for even after years have passed and Timmy, Robert and Catherine’s son, wanted to find out for himself if the rumors were true. Between the rumors of some child disappearing on the property to banging noises in the attic, Timmy was determined to find out what happened without his parents knowing what he was up to.
When Timmy fell in love with Whiskers, the cat, I wasn’t quite certain if that was a good thing or not for him, considering it was rumored the cat was exceptionally old and looked it. Yet, Timmy grew attached quickly to him. One day, however, he came home from school and found out his parents didn’t want anything to do with Whiskers and gave it to a neighbor who had cats. I honestly wasn’t sure if that was a good decision or not for the Thompson family overall. As the story played out, Whiskers didn’t disappoint!
I felt this book was a great read for intermediate readers, and the storyline continued to build as you got further into the book. Each character had an important role to play in the story, and each rumor told was an important stepping stone to keep you guessing what will happen to the Thompson family in the end and what Timmy found out while poking around with his friends, Jasper and Louisa. I loved the intrigue and the paranormal themes that rang throughout the pages. I feel that any reader who loves mysteries, with a paranormal twist, will love reading this book.
Overall, The Cat Who Chased Ghosts is a story that has great characters, the perfect paranormal setting, and an intriguing storyline that captivates the reader from cover to cover. I highly recommend this story for readers of all ages!
