Emory is a boy who loves staying at his Baba's (grandmother's) house and going to the hidden falls. One day, he feels someone watching him. He turns around, but no one is there. Then he hears someone say, "Away." He goes back to his Baba's house and tells her he saw the Oaf, a person who cleans up trash and keep the environment clean. His Baba tells him to bring the Oaf a special sandwich to eat. He writes a note telling the Oaf where he lives, and Emory brings the lunch in a white paper bag and sets it where he likes to sit. Will the Oaf eat the sandwich? Who IS the Oaf?

Opinion:

This book has a clear theme of taking care of nature. I did like that the Oaf could become practically invisible, and he could sneak up on people without making a sound. He taught this to Emory and his sister Faye. The characters were very well-written because I could relate to them. I gave this book four stars because it was a little bit too nature-loving for me. One example was, "Be the breeze, caressing the petals of the flowers." I would recommend this book to 8-12-year-olds who love nature.
