Julie Cavallo, the main character in The Sinister Superyacht by Ana T Drew, runs a successful gluten-free patisserie with her younger sister Flo and friend Eric. Together with Julie’s grandmother, Rose, the three of them form an amateur detective team - FERJ (standing for Flo, Eric, Rose, Julie). When Julie and Rose sign up to be the baker and baker’s assistant on the crew of the l’Occitane, a superyacht owned by Jean-Louis and Valerie Ponsard, they are expecting an uneventful week of creating tasty treats for their rich clients. All goes well for three days until Valerie’s hated mother, Michelle, goes missing from the yacht. The police take over the cruise ending the trip early, and FERJ starts investigating. Then, a few days later, Michelle’s Private Investigator, Roland Oliveira, is found dead in his burnt down house. All the clues point to Michelle’s personal assistant, Laure, but Julie has a hunch that she is innocent. Who really is the killer? Will the police put an innocent person in jail? Will Julie and her detective team be able to solve the mystery?
Opinion:
The Sinister Superyacht by Ana T Drew is a very fast-paced, suspenseful book with many plot twists. The reader will be pulled into the characters' stories as if you were in the book yourself solving the mystery. However, there were a lot of characters to keep track of and sometimes I got them mixed up. The beginning of the book set the scene and introduced the characters, so the action took a little while to get going. This is the third book in the Julie Cavallo series, but I didn’t really feel like I was missing the characters' backstories even though I haven’t read the first two books. I would recommend this book for anyone over 10 years old who loves mysteries.
