The Last of the Navel Navigators is a book about a boy, nicknamed Jellybean, who discovers that he can open portals by sticking his finger in his belly button. The basic premise is that years ago, there used to be tons of people referred to as “navigators.” They can do the same thing Jellybean can, open portals to other places. He is taken in by Caspian Thrall, and the two, along with a goat named Brian, go on an adventure through Jellybean’s portals to find his parents.
Opinion:
While the premise of opening portals by sticking a finger in your belly button is odd, the book certainly makes it seem normal. The plot, while mostly interesting, failed to really grab me. The other issue I have is that the story has no real direction. The characters just go through portal to portal, attempting to reach Jellybean’s parents. The one thing I would change about the book is the ending. It fails to convey if Jellybean ever found his parents, so that would be a good change.
