LitPick Review
The Rise of Renegade X by Chelsea Campbell was a story of a teen who struggles to figure out if he is a hero or a villain. The book starts at Damien’s 16th birthday party. In this world, when someone turns 16, they get either a V or a H on their thumb. Some people don’t get a letter, though. V means you’re a villain and H means you’re a hero. At midnight, Damien’s thumb doesn’t change into a V or a H. It becomes a X. He does some research: X means half hero, half villain. He then finds out his dad is a famous superhero, and he is sent from his supervillain mom to live with his hero dad. What will Damien become? Hero or villain??
Opinion:
I thought this book was quite good, although there were a few sections that were really mature thrown in there, like underage drinking and sex references. My favorite part was when Damien plays a hero and a villain at once. If the author was trying to make a suspenseful page-turner, I would say they did not succeed. The book was suspenseful, but the interludes like the party scene are just kind of weird and off topic. I would recommend this book to readers who are mature, because of the underage drinking and sex references.
