The Millhouses were supposed to help. In a country torn apart by the ravages of war, the Millhouses were created to help the government back onto its feet. Or at least, that’s what the people were told.

Vera Devancourt was surrendered to the mills with her twin brother at just nine years old after her parents could no longer pay the heavy taxes required to have more than one child. Her baby sister stayed behind. Six years later, while working as the driver for the herb mill, Vera is shocked when her sister shows up at one of the influxes and is assigned to the service mill. A mill shrouded by the rumors of men in charge abusing the girls within.

When Vera goes to visit her sister, she comes face to face with the reality of the situation and fights back alongside a young girl named Ramsey. The girls are forced to flee for their lives. Thus begins their long battle against the Millhouses. After making some unlikely friends, Vera fights back. She fights for her brother who was left behind, for her little sister, and for all of the people who were ever forced into the mill system.

This heroic story of strength against a seemingly impossible situation has all the feels. Laugh, cry, and adventure alongside the brave Vera Devancourt in this inspiring story of how a few people can change the world.

Opinion:

I loved this book. Set in a futuristic situation in America, I really got into it. The author thoughtfully and carefully laced together a story of love and loss in a fight for freedom and security. I enjoyed it so much that I read it in just one day. In my opinion, this book is right up with books like The Hunger Games and Divergent. I truly hope to see more of this author’s books in the future.

This book was action packed, emotion filled, and an altogether amazing story. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in action or futuristic situations. I give this book a 5/5 and would recommend it for readers ages 12-18.
