Allie has been a prisoner of the Greaser Hotel and the Friendly's since she was six years old. Every day she is abused as she cleans rooms and serves food. Her only friends are the other prisoners and a mysterious talking cat called Jerome, who brings stories of the outside world, where strange things like shopping malls and having more than one dress exist. Little does Allie know her life is about become more interesting.

Opinion:

This was better than I expected it to be. The plot really unfolded itself well. I like how realistically Allie is shown adjusting to her new freedom. I like how it is in no part a romantic teen relationship story. The only thing I don't like is Jerome's story (or lack of one).  We are barley given anything to tell us how a cat became capable of talking and changing size. We barely even get any information as to why he seeks out Allie.  Presumably this is left so that in the case of a second book you want to read it and get answers, or perhaps it is left so we can have our own speculations. Nevertheless it is very vexing.
