LitPick Review
River of Peril is an intriguing story set in 1864. It’s about a twelve year old boy named Jem Coulter. He and his Pa, sister, and a few others are leaving their hometown of Goldtown for Sacramento, California. This should be the trip of a lifetime for Jem, but something isn’t right. Pa won’t say what, but Jem can feel it. Nearing the end of their two-day tiresome journey, highway men attack the coach! They steal a valuable shipment of gold from the coach and run away. Pa should be upset, but he isn’t. Jem’s vacation is then turned upside down as he learns the truth and has to save his sister from the clutches of the Knights of the Golden Circle. Will they make it back home? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
Opinion:
River of Peril is attention grabbing and it’s hard to put the book down! The author does an excellent job of describing events. She makes if feel as if you were in the book, living the adventure for yourself. Jem and Ellie are the main characters. Jem is Ellie’s older brother. It is easy to imagine them as real characters because of the vivid pictures the author creates. This book would be most enjoyed by nine to twelve year olds. Even though it is a historical book, it does not yield much information about the time period it is set in. However, the plot is simple to understand and makes it a page turner. River of Peril is one book you should read!
