LitPick Review
NSFW is a science fiction book by David Scott Hay that takes us into a world where social media rules as people try their best to outlive various tragedies. How would you feel if you are presented with a job with the prospect of getting a bonus after surviving a 90-day probationary period? Sounds quite nice, right? @Sa>ag3 and @Jun1p3r accepted the job as social media moderators with a goal to reach the 90-day probationary period and receive the bonus. Days passed and they realized it is not easy as they face the gruesome death of people, violence, trauma, PTSD, and most of all, social media addiction. It is everywhere on the internet, and they even got a Faraday shield to block all electronic signals entering and leaving their devices. People who were offered the job had to quit after some days and others committed suicide. Even their previous manager left to become a paranormal investigator. As the days passed, would these two reach the final day? How do you think they would cope with all these tragedies? At the end of the 90-day probationary period, would they receive their said bonus?
Opinion:
The book is dystopian fiction set in a modern world. It relates to our world as violence, suicide, and even social media addiction is faced by both young and old today. The characters and style of writing is unique as the characters are represented by their social media handles and the plot is like no one I have ever read. Each character's speech lacks quotation marks. Additionally, the sex scenes made the book feel more interesting. The first few pages of the book were confusing, but as I continued exploring each page, I was so pinned that I surprisingly finished the whole book faster than I thought I would. I love the fact that that book is relatable. I love when the author referred to @Jun1p3r as "you". For example, on page 29 where it says “You squeeze my hand,” I was amazed because it felt like it was directed at me. I dislike the fact that that the book lacks opening and closing quotation marks for the characters' spoken words. Apart from that, the book was definitely an intriguing one.
