LitPick Review
Joshua Dread: The Nameless Hero is the second book in a series about a boy who has supervillain parents and a superpower of his own. He already leads an interesting life that everyone wants to keep a secret. He’s finishing up a busy school year and is looking forward to a quiet, lazy summer. That’s only a hope and dream because it all changes when he and his friend, Sophie, are specially invited to a summer camp for the “Gyfted and Talented.” Another friend, Milton, who has no special powers at all, forges himself an invitation and tags along. They quickly find out this is no traditional fun camp, and experiences of a lifetime are ahead of them as they train to be part of the best superhero team ever. As dangerous surprises keep showing up, the kids are expected to save the day! At the same time, Joshua wonders what his parents might do if they find out!
Opinion:
Lee Bacon has written a fantastic book! I haven’t had a chance to read the first one in the series, but this story still made sense to me. It is fast-paced and loaded with action. It is a classic good vs. evil superhero story with modern day reality TV mixed in, so it is often quite funny. All of the plot’s twists and turns held my attention, and I couldn’t put the book down until I finished reading it. Some of the characters are pictured. Others aren’t, but they are still so lifelike in the story that I could envision them in my mind. They made an everyday kid like me wish I had a gift or special power that could lead me on this kind of adventure.
