It's the middle of World War II. The Germans, under the leadership of the Fuhrer, crafted a strange and unusual weapon against their enemy, the Americans. This weapon is a product of Doctor Keller's labwork. The weapon is mutated ants. Each ant is as huge as an automobile. German soldiers were sent to drop off the Queen and male drone in America on Swans Island, Maine, where the Queen would lay hundreds of eggs a day which would become mostly workers, queens and drones. These ants with ferocious appetites would cause massive destruction of crops, animals, equipment, and even humans. A few weeks after the ants entered Swans Island, the island occupants began to notice the slaughter of their animals first. Shortly after, the occupants had to engage in a fierce battle to fight off these ants, which were now a threat not only to animals but also to humans. The family of Mary Cunningham played a major role in this story.  Mary's husband had gone off to war.  Mary and her son, Declan, and her daughter, Jane, stayed on the island.  Mary, Declan, and Mary's aunt, Ida, fought against the monstrous ants while defending their neighbors. Engaged in a very fierce battle, the occupants fought bravely to defend not just their land but also the mainland.  If the ants should leave the island after causing destruction and get to the mainland, they would be difficult to eradicate and could cause more massive casualties.

Opinion:

The author, Jamie Dodson, has a remarkable writing style as the storyline flowed well and the characters were well-developed. Among the characters, I was endeared to Declan in particular, as this young teenage boy found himself in a tough situation and he did all he could to protect his family.  In the story, there are some German terms which weren't easily relatable, but the author provided translations at the end of the book. Nevertheless, Home Fires Burning is an interesting and thought-provoking novel. It is indeed a page-turner. The book has suspense, action, adventure, and surprises. I give this book a 4/5 stars. I recommend it to readers who find books such as this exciting. Lovers of action and science fiction novels wouldn't want to pass on this one.
