On a hot summer night, Johnny is riding his bike when all of a sudden he crashes into a large cardboard box. He goes flying off his bike from the impact. When he finally looks in the box, he is greeted by two pair of eyes staring back at him. So starts a fun and unique friendship between Johnny, Lloyd the Duck, and Harriette the Hen.

Opinion:

This was such an adorable story that I feel children will love because you see how Johnny literally crashed into meeting Lloyd the Duck and Harriette the Hen. Since all these characters were of different species, I feel it teaches children that it’s special making friends with different people, or in this case different species. Making friends with others helps you develop character and makes you more well-rounded.

Another point I enjoyed reading was how after Johnny crashed into the large cardboard box, he didn’t just leave when he heard noise coming out of it. Instead, when he opened the box, he found Lloyd and Harriette staring back at him. He was responsible enough to take both animals home to make sure they were okay. In the process, a fun and unique friendship blossomed among the three of them. This also teaches children that you are responsible for your actions just like Johnny was after crashing into the box that contained Lloyd and Harriette.

The illustrations, provided by Bonnie Lemaire who also wrote this story, were vibrantly colored and comical in design. Readers will smile as they turn the pages of this delightfully entertaining children’s book. Each picture was full-paged and found on every single page of this fun story. The illustrations perfectly portrayed the friendship shared between Johnny, Lloyd, and Harriette.

Bonnie is a Canadian illustrator and writer who believes that stories come to life through vibrant illustrations and playful characters. Illustrating children’s books has always been her passion.

Overall, A Friendship in a Box is a story that will bring a smile to every reader’s face as they turn the pages. The story was enjoyable, the characters were fun to get to know, and their adventures together were comical to watch unfold. This was a pure delight to read!
