The Bagel Who Wanted Everything is a picture book by Alan Silberberg. The story follows a plain bagel, who frankly wants to be everything but plain. Plain bagel wishes for a change, seeking advice from his family members, who encourage him to be happy as the bagel he is. He decides to take action, trying out various toppings - clouds, seaweed, and even flowers! When his friends see his new look, they can’t help but laugh, giving Plain bagel second thoughts. Maybe being plain was okay, after all…until something unexpected happens, leaving all of the bagels in awe. Will Plain bagel learn to be happy with who he is, or will the other bagels try to be more, too?
Opinion:
The Bagel Who Wanted Everything is an upbeat story about learning to appreciate yourself for who you are. I would consider this book a hybrid between a classic picture book and a graphic novel style book. While there is some narrative text on each page, much of the text is laced into the illustrations, including the use of speech bubbles. The text itself, specifically the graphic features, are bold and eye-catching. Bright, colorful illustrations fill each page from cover to cover and can tell the story on their own.
Silberberg uses a favorite food for many, and turns it into a valuable lesson. This is a unique way to show children that being you is perfect, but it’s also just fine to be ambitious and want more. Additionally, it’s okay to wear many hats, and choosing which one is right for you is part of growing and learning. This book is a fun read for all ages, from young children to adults alike, with a reminder to never stop chasing your hopes and dreams. A must for any classroom and home library, The Bagel Who Wanted Everything is sure to be a best seller!
