The book Akarnae is a story of a teenage girl named Alex (short for Alexandra) who is drawn into a completely new world. Her parents are paleontologists, and when they get called on a once-in-a-lifetime trip with the world’s greatest paleontologist, they can't refuse. Alex’s parents are allowed to go on one condition, no children.  So Alex gets sent to a boarding school. On her first day at the school, she goes to see the principal but gets sidetracked by a door that leads to a beautiful forest. Thinking she would just explore, Alex walks through the door.

Later, she wakes up and sees a boy named Aven standing over her.  After Aven leaves, Alex goes wandering and finds two boys her age named Bear and Jorden. The boys explain that their world is called Akarnae. They attend a boarding school where everybody has a gift or a special talent such as invisibility or mind reading. When Alex goes to the headmaster's office in their school, she is told that the headmaster is out inspecting the border lands. They tell her she should attend the school until the headmaster got back.  The story tells about her adventures learning about and finding her gift and trying to return home.

Opinion:

I would rate this book 5 stars; it is now one of my favorite books. I found it was easy to follow the plot, and the story was captivating. The story is told by following Alex around, and the reader gets to know her thoughts. I loved how well I got to learn the different characters' personalities. It was hard to put the book down because I wanted to know what would happen next to Alex. Though there were no pictures in Akarnae, the descriptive language made it very easy for me the see what was going on in my mind. Akarnae is a funny book (it made me laugh out loud once) but not as funny as some of the other books I've read. Akarnae is now one of my top five favorite books!
