LitPick Review

During her weekly outing with her granddaughters, Melanie and Maiya, Ganey can’t wait to take them to the local zoo. Before they leave, the girls are doing some math homework. Ganey gets the great idea that she will reinforce their math training by doing a counting lesson of different things at the zoo. The girls and Ganey are excited to start their trip to the zoo.
When they arrive, Ganey immediately starts asking the kindergarteners different number questions of all the things surrounding them while they walk from exhibit to exhibit. When they take a lunch break at the food court, Ganey continues their counting lesson of all the foods available for them to buy. Do the girls have fun with their math lesson with their grandmother?
Opinion:
The first reason I truly loved this children’s book was for the fun math lessons Dr. Randle created for her characters Melanie and Maiya to accomplish while they were visiting their local zoo with their grandmother, Ganey. She wrote the story in such fashion that children won’t even know they are learning something along with Melanie and Maiya as they turn the pages. Children will eagerly want to count along with the girls to see if they get the answers right. I feel this reinforces that learning math can be a fun experience when presented in the right way. Dr. Randle even included a few animal counting exercises that readers can do themselves at the end of the story.
Another reason I enjoyed reading this story was that Dr. Randle took the time to write about how Ganey loved spending time with her grandchildren, and they would do a weekly outing together. It was such a sweet moment to see how Ganey looked just as forward to going out with her grandchildren as much as they enjoyed spending time with her. To wrap a storyline around this sweet gesture made me smile. This also shows children that spending time with family, such as your grandparents, is very important, and they should look eagerly forward to that special time together.

Overall, Ganey Teaches Counting is a story that readers of all ages can enjoy. It teaches children that learning counting can be fun when you make it a game. They’ll also enjoy getting to know the characters as they turn the pages, and they get to look at all the different colorful animals that illustrate this delightful children’s book.
