LitPick Review
This book started with the Khanorian Campaign, which is the invasion by the Commonwealth Defense Force, CDF, into Khanoria to deal with Khanorians who were against the tyrant rule of the Sorin. The CDF are Guardians of the Human Republic, the Commonwealth, made up of Eden and Satellite One in the Planet Dilaxus, where humans reside. Khanorians were on another planet called Planet Mabbeon. The CDF invaded Khanoria at the request of the Sorin, and this event left vengeance in the hearts of wounded Khanorians particularly Zataldra who lost her father, Jud'Zarr, the leader of the Khanorian Revolution in the encounter with the CDF. A few years after, she and her Khanorian allies united with Dafulton, an ex-dictator, joining the Collective whose sole purpose is to seek vengeance, and they began the mission to hold the humans accountable for the atrocities they've committed not only in Khanoria but in other planets. Several ambassador delegates, Jarius and two others, Arlo and Cruz, were sent to rescue the CDF soldiers who were captured and detained in Khanoria after an interplanetary mission. What was intended to be a peaceful resolution between the Commonwealth and Khanoria turned out to become the start of the war on humans. With this inevitable war fueled by vengeance, the lives of Jarius, his fiancee Jazzlyn, his best friend and colleague Randy, and Randy's girlfriend Stacie were on the line as were many of their loved ones.
Opinion:
This is an incredible book by Michael J. Brooks. The writing style of the author must be commended as he made sure first time readers of this book, which is in series, got an idea of what happened in the first two books, Republic Falling: Advent of a New Dawn and Republic Under Siege: Threat from Within. There was a glossary at the end of the book to aid understanding of difficult terms. The storyline was great as the story flowed perfectly. The characters were also well-developed. Among the characters of the book, one which I was endeared to was Randy Scott, one of the CDF Guardians. He was an honorable man who would choose to do what is right regardless of the situation, circumstances, or who might be offended by his decisions and actions. He was someone who made sacrifices for his friends even when it's not convenient. This book, Republic Shattered: Sins of Before, has what great books entail: action, adventure, surprises, and love. This is an amazing and interesting science fiction novel, beautifully and intricately crafted, and is indeed worth the read, I must say. People who dislike mature scenes could, however, find it too graphic. The book also ended with a hint for continuation. Overall, the book gives a thrilling experience mixed with curiosity, making it a page-turner. I give the book a five out of five stars. Happy reading!
