Defying the odds, a sapling thrives in a world of scarcity and despair. Set during the turbulent time of World War II, this story takes place in the Terezin ghetto where a group of children find a glimmer of hope in tending to a small sapling. As the war rages on, and the sapling establishes roots, likewise, these children of the war hold fast. Will their perseverance sustain them?
Opinion:
Tree of Life spotlights “a quiet, courageous act of resistance.” Keeping children in mind, author Elisa Boxer introduces the Holocaust through her moving portrayal of life in Terezin. By including children as central characters, Boxer makes the story relatable to her audience. Too, the Author’s Note adds credence to the events. The lovely illustrations by Alianna Rozentsveig have a folklore feel that enhances the tenderness of the story. Ideal for opening a conversation, the Tree of Life is a touching account of courage and hope in the face of adversity. Do not miss this story of determination and courage.
