LitPick Review
Maddy and Grace Fight the Fog is a thirty page picture book that starts out as a simple fishing trip and turns into a scary adventure. Grandma Mei waves farewell to Maddy and Grace as they take the rowboat out on the ocean just like they had many times before, donning life jackets, worms, and rods. The fog surrounds Maddy and Grace unexpectedly, and they can no longer see the shore. The fight for survival is on as they paddle mistakenly farther away from shore lost in the fog.
Opinion:
Maddy and Grace Fight the Fog is a creative new way to tell the familiar old fairy/folk story of prevailing forces against Maddy and Grace, in a modern setting. The setting of the story is done well with simple pictures and words to describe the scenes perfectly. Indeed, Maddy and Grace, like all heroes in a fairy/folk tale, survived and learned a lesson that it is best to always have an adult with you and always be prepared for your adventure. Emotions range from joy to being petrified on their little adventure. The events and circumstances are unrealistic but spin a good story and a lesson learned to be prepared. The illustrations capture emotion, joy, fear, frustration, and relief on the faces of the two main characters. In the end, Maddy and Grace retell the mistakes they made on their adventure.
