Chia is a blind twelve-year-old who is forced to look for diamonds in a mine for her horrid step-mother--Priscilla. Chia is very selfless and makes most of her mistakes because of that. Her “wonderful” twin sister, Viola, has betrayed Chia many times, but Chia does not know that because Viola and Priscilla have altered her memory.

One day, when Chia is working in the mines, a weird woman shows up and takes her to 66 Lilly Pilly Lane. This house is full of magic and has many animals living inside. The beings at 66 Lilly Pilly Lane use magic to cure her blindness. They then go on a mission to save her sister, Viola, from the clutches of Priscilla at the castle, but her new friends at 66 Lilly Pilly Lane believe that Viola is as rotten as Priscilla. They cannot tell her why or their plan will not work, and Chia does not understand why they cannot explain everything to her. Her friends only tell her to steal Priscilla’s heart and replace it with another heart. Chia is the only one who can do it. What is their plan? Why can’t they tell her? Is Viola really as bad as Priscilla? Why does Chia have to steal Priscilla’s heart?

Opinion:

The Splendid Secrets of 66 Lilly Pilly Lane was an awesome book to read! I was so intrigued by how the author described things at the beginning since the main character, Chia, was blind. It would be extremely challenging only to use four senses since sight was out of the question for her. I also loved the animal characters. The relationships between one another were very sentimental and sweet.

The Splendid Secrets of 66 Lilly Pilly Lane reminded me of Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. If you read this book, you will see why.

The book has a very important theme, which is to take care of yourself and make yourself a priority. One of the characters in the book, who is a tree, tells the girl that she needs to put herself first; she does not listen, and she makes many mistakes. It says in the book that people need to find a balance between being too selfish and too selfless--balance is needed. I have never read a book that has that theme, and I liked it since it was different.

I would recommend this book for ages 8 and up. I was always trying to guess what would happen next, and I love that in a book. Since there were absolutely no flaws in this book, I give it 5 of 5 stars.
