LitPick Review
Stand-Off is the sequel to Winger by Andrew Smith. In this duology, we follow a boy named Ryan Dean West. He goes to a Pine Mountain Academy. He is a 14-year-old junior who is also on the rugby team. In Winger, we read about his junior year: his classes, his friendships, his new relationship, and his time on the rugby team. Unfortunately, he is moved to O-Hall or Opportunity Hall, which is where all the bad kids reside during their school year. He was caught hacking a stolen cell phone from a teacher.
Opinion:
I really enjoyed reading Winger and Stand-Off. Ryan Dean was funny, sarcastic, and somewhat relatable. The illustrations throughout the book were very fitting to the story. It was a little repetitive in regards to his attitude toward his roommate and girlfriend. There is a lot more inappropriate adult talk than in the first book, which was uncomfortable.
