84 Ribbons is a wonderful story about a dancer and her journey through the professional world of ballet. After arriving in Billings, Montana to start her career as a professional ballerina, Marta Selbyrth is in for several not-so-welcome surprises. Once she secures a place to live, Marta begins her dancing journey. It is so full of ups and downs that it soon becomes a roller coaster. In the midst of Marta’s ballet life, she finds the time for a young man who easily captures her heart. Everything seems to settle down, and life becomes slightly simpler. But when a tragic accident occurs, Marta is banned from dancing because of an unfortunate ankle injury. She must learn to be patient and cope with herself while recovering. Rushing healing is never a good idea, as Marta is about to find out. Will she ever be able to dance again?

Opinion:

I truly enjoyed reading this book! Being a dancer myself, I found it extremely easy to relate to the struggles of the ballet world that are so effortlessly portrayed in this story. The author does a wonderful job of exposing the reader to the professional world of ballet.

The plot is slightly slow to start developing, but once the book gets going, it’s hard to put down! We travel along with Marta as she attempts to find her place in the ballet company. Each character has their own unique voice and personality that shines through even if they don’t play a major role in the story.

One thing that bothered me as I was reading the book was the love scenes. I feel as if they were a little over dramatic and that Marta’s relationship with her boyfriend develops far too quickly. Because of the love scenes throughout story, I would not recommend that kids under thirteen or fourteen years old read this book.

Setting aside the overdone love scenes, this book really was a joy to read! The author invites the reader to discover the magical, yet challenging world of ballet as Marta weaves her way through the ups and downs of living on her own and dancing with a professional ballet company.
