LitPick Review
Young-hee and the Pullocho is a courageous story about a Korean girl by the name of Young-hee. Everything in Young-hee’s life is boring, drab, and annoying-especially her little brother, Bum. All Young-hee wants is to have a little fun in her life, but before she knows it, she is thrust into a magical realm that she never knew existed, where all of the old Korean legends she heard have turned out to be true. Just when things seem interesting and more astounding than anything Young-hee had ever experienced, her little brother, Bum, is kidnapped in the realm and Young-hee must go on a vast, treacherous journey as she encounters ghosts, goblins, and many other fearsome creatures to find the rare pullocho plant to save him and get back home.
Will Young-hee be able to find the pullocho in time to save her brother and return home to her drab life? Or will she be lost in the magical realm forever?
Opinion:
I enjoyed reading Young-hee and the Pullocho, but it wasn't a page turner. I thought the idea of the story was very interesting, and I liked all the characters introduced to me, but it felt as though the story dragged on. I just wasn’t sucked into the story. However, the characters thoughts and feelings were described very well. I typically like fantasies very much, but I just didn’t love this one as much as I had hoped. I would recommend this book for a fifth-grade reading level and for those who like legends and fairy tales.
