Challenged with the fact that her death had been one of brutal torture, Velveteen struggles to keep her emotions hidden in purgatory. As a ghost, she’s doing pretty well, friends and a good job, until she picks up a soul that she just can’t seem to shake. Nick’s one of those jock types with that smile that makes most girls’ knees weak, and Velvet can’t stand it. Falling for him is inevitable, though, as he gets thrown into the mess of her life. Knowing that it’s risky to have a relationship, Velvet hides her feelings behind a mask of rude comments and snarky remarks. Soon, purgatory is in threat of being torn apart at the seams, and Velvet will have to use all the help she can get to save the afterlife.

Opinion:

This book was action packed from the first page. Velvet is a sassy heroine that you’ve got to love and hate at the same time.  She’s rude and violent to hide the fact that she’s scared mentally. Sometimes, though, you end up thinking, “Really? You have to be that way about everything?”

Velvet’s and Nick’s relationship, like a lot of paranormal romance, is fast paced and rushed. Though, I think in this book it worked. Nick connected with Velvet from the moment he saw her, even if it took her more time to realize her feelings.

Overall, I think this was a very good book. Unlike some books, I didn’t get bored by how slow it was. There are some zombie scenes, which in my mind make this book ten times better. Also, there was a lot of poltergeisting and ghosts, being a ghost book and all. Readers, prepare yourself for the, “This is not happening. This is not happening. This is not happening.” mantra.

This book may not be for everyone, but I recommend you try it.
