In The Strawberry Toad, Tom the Toad is looking for a new home after emerging from underground during the long winter months. He wants a place that will keep him safe and provide for his needs. When he finds a garden, it seems like the perfect place. There are flowers, herbs, and many friends. But as he explores the garden, he struggles to find the perfect spot to make his home. He is exhausted from his journey and must get some rest. He is startled by a woman who tends the garden. Will she allow him to stay or nudge him on his way?

Opinion:

The Strawberry Toad is a cute story about finding a place to belong, a message we can all relate to. Sometimes our journey is filled with struggles and disappointments, but if we keep pushing forward, we are bound to find exactly what we need.

My girls, ages 7 and 9, enjoyed this story. We have a handful of toads who have made our garden their home, so my kids were quickly able to connect this story to their own experiences.

My girls commented on their love of the illustrations, and they were each quick to point out their favorite pages. The illustration style is eclectic - with some images looking more realistic than others. Various artistic mediums are highlighted throughout this book.

The preface provides interesting information about toads and other amphibians. Did you know toads are a sign of a healthy environment?
