Ava and her brother Noah have just finished school and are on their way to their annual camping trip with their parents. Their dad accidentally hits something with the car, and when he goes outside to check it, his hand gets caught in a wolf trap. Since they have no electronics with them, the family has no way to get help. Ava and Noah are forced to go out and look for anyone who is able to help them. While they are walking, they come across a mysterious cave. They go inside and see drawings all over the wall.  All of a sudden, they are transported back in time - all the way to caveman time! There, they meet a macaque monkey called Maca. They quickly realize that Maca is being mistreated by two cave people who have enslaved him.  Ava and Noah decide that they will help Maca, but how? Perhaps the Gimmicky Magic Gadget they have obtained will help!

Opinion:

The Gimmicky Gadget was a great read. When I first started the book, I was a bit confused as a lot of things happened quickly in the first few pages. However, after re-reading a bit of the beginning, I understood that the two siblings had gone back in time. The rest of the story was easy to understand. I liked how the story started off as realistic fiction, but quickly took a turn towards fantasy and science-fiction with the use of magical gadgets and time travel. I think the author did a great job of blending multiple genres in this book. Additionally, I liked how the author made Ava and Noah's characters relatable. Just like siblings in real life, they bickered but were there for each other in times of need. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to readers looking for an exciting story full of adventure, kindness, and a lesson on treating others right!
