The Big Empty is a story about seven teenagers who survived a plague that wiped out more than half of the human race. They are trapped in a place where life will never be the same, with power systems failing all over the world, supply chains gone, most of the middle of the U.S. an evacuated zone, and the U.S. government changed to a military dictatorship. Their last hope for a better life is to find a secret community hidden in the Big Empty, the evacuated zone. To reach this destination, they must avoid soldiers patrolling the area, members of a dangerous gang known as the Slash, and many other obstacles thrown in their path. These obstacles ultimately bring them together in their search for a better life.

Opinion:

I thought that this was a very well written book with a unique story. J.B.Stephens focuses on a different teenager in each of the beginning chapters of the book, until all the teenagers meet up. Through this approach you get to know each character well before J.B. Stephens continues with the main story. I enjoyed each of the characters and the way that the author blends them into an exciting story, so I would highly recommend this book.
