The Best Worst Christmas Ever by Thomas J. Thorson is a story that begins on Christmas evening with John Natale, the dad, and his children Parker, Candance, and Lily. Everyone is immersed in their phones and computer until the Wi-Fi goes down and the lights go out because of the storm. The dad comes up with different ideas to spend quality time together, starting with building a cozy couch from pillows and holding a cooking competition between the siblings. This soon leads them on an adventure to help Santa Claus find his missing box through their story time. What begins as a strange adventure soon becomes a heartwarming journey of togetherness.

Opinion:

This book is a short fantasy novel set during Christmas time. The book is mystical and beautifully written, making me forget it was just a story, and I found it very immersive. The hand-drawn illustrations, based on each chapter’s settings, made it easy to visualize the story. The pacing kept me engaged, with each chapter leaving me curious about what would happen next. I especially liked how the adventure made me feel like I was part of the group exploring the North Pole to find Santa Claus’s box. The author’s flow of writing and choice of vocabulary like gnarly, rickety, and incessant made it an enjoyable read. Together, the language and illustrations created a magical fantasy world. I would recommend this book for Christmas time and for readers of all ages. Overall, I rate this book a 4/5 because it was so fun and immersive.
