LitPick Review
The Best Worst Christmas Ever is a story about a family - a dad, two daughters, and a son - whose holiday vacation has been canceled due to poor weather conditions. The children are upset about their ruined holiday, and so the dad has to come up with a way to salvage Christmas Eve despite protests from the children. To make it worse, the electricity goes out, and so the family has to be creative in order to make the most of their situation.
Opinion:
Overall, I thought this turned out to be a pretty sweet story about a dad and his three kids - Parker, Lily, and Candace. Even though the children are often bickering with one another, they end up coming together and having some quality family time. They are upset by the circumstances at first, but by the time they have brainstormed creative things they can do together to pass the time, the children end up getting invested and working together in a really nice way.
The ideas they come up with did sound pretty fun, and I liked how hard the dad was trying to bring them together as a family. It showed that beneath the usual arguing, they do really care for one another.
I did think it was odd that even though the main idea for the night was to come up with a Christmas story together, the dad goes against his own rules and just basically throws out parts of the story that had been added by the kids. It just didn't seem very collaborative on his part. He could have just told a full story on his own if that's what he wanted to do.
In terms of the story that they are creating, I thought it was an interesting adventure. I think it was a nice touch to have the characters in the story be versions of the children. So, even though we are not spending that much time with the real children, it still feels like we're getting to know them through the storytelling. I liked that they had to work together to solve some creative Christmasy puzzles. The winter atmosphere and Christmas paraphernalia throughout were nice to keep the holiday feeling strong. I think this would be a nice story for children, especially those with siblings.
I thought the ending was sweet, even if it was cliche. The story being told and the real world story tied together nicely, and I liked that it felt like this was just kind of Santa's plan all along.
