Ever since the death of Betsy’s mother, her life begins to fall apart. She is forced to quit private school and move to the public school in her town, leaving behind all her friends. Her father begins to drink more and stops taking care of the house. And worst of all, he gets a new girlfriend, Abbie, who starts to try to infiltrate their lives. During a fight with her dad, Betsy learns that her mom was suffering from depression and may have committed suicide, and she starts to ask more questions about her mom’s life. Things began to get better when Betsy’s dad breaks up with Abbie and Betsy makes a friend in school. Under the encouragement of her teacher, she also joins the school band. But when her father's drinking gets worse, Betsy isn’t sure what to do. Will she and her brother be ok, and will Betsy ever find out the truth about her mother?

Opinion:

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I think the author did a great job of showing what the pain of a teenager who loses a parent is like. Through Betsy’s thoughts and actions, I could see how she was struggling with missing her mother, watching out for her little brother, and having complicated feelings about her father’s new girlfriend. Even though I have not lost a parent, Betsy’s thought process felt relatable to me. I also liked how the author wrote the book through the voice of Betsy, and used a snarky and funny voice to tell the events of the story. This made the book more entertaining and added an element of humor to the book, since it was focused on serious topics. The story moved at a fast pace, and there were no parts that felt slow or boring. I would recommend this book to all middle school/high school readers!
