Why? Because we are all subject to fallacies. These are illogical ways of handling ideas that seem logical at the time and therefore often lead is down the wrong path.
Logical Thinking: The Essential Ten Percent displays, explains, and provides examples of the general principles and practices of logical thinking, with particular emphasis on avoiding fallacies. Part of it reads like a textbook. However, much of it is in the form of essays that are used to go more deeply into certain matters that the textbook format would not allow. Together, it is hoped that the textbook format and the essay format will serve as an easy introduction to the key aspects of logical thinking as well as providing a fundamental, easy-to-use reference work.
Please bear in mind that the purpose of this book is not to teach you to think, but to help you think more logically.
There is a difference. Thinking logically is not always the best thing to do. Most artists do not think logically; if they did they probably would never produce any original works of lasting value. Likewise for poets, composers, song writers, novelists, etc. This would fall under the rubric of “creative thinking.”
Whatever other kinds of thinking we may do, logical thinking is likely to enter into the process. This is especially true regarding personal decisions that will affect how we, and those close to us, will live our lives. It is also true regarding political and social decisions that will affect the future of our community, our country, our world. For example, compulsory vaccination of all schoolchildren, assisted suicide, insurance coverage for alternative medicine, polygamy, same-sex marriages, etc.
Failure to recognize and avoid common mistakes in logical thinking that can lead to misjudgments that could sometimes result in major — and usually unpleasant — consequences.
As any teacher knows, saying something once is tantamount to not saying it at all. Key ideas must be frequently repeated to be certain that they don’t get lost in the details. The reader will therefore see pieces of information repeated in many different places. This is to ensure that vital information is always available when and where the reader needs it. He won’t have to go looking for it on an earlier page in order to understand the page he is currently reading.
To add some light relief, the book also contains a chapter on “Logic through the Looking Glass,” delightfully instructive illogical passages from Lewis Carroll’s class Alice in Wonderland books, an equally delightful and instructive excerpt from a short story by Isaac Asimov, and a list of “Common Misconceptions: Things We Know that Just Aren’t So.”
Logical Thinking: The Essential Ten Percent is part of the expanding “The Essential Ten Percent” series. The series was launched in 2011 on the premise that many self-instructional books fail to distinguish between:
•Casual Users — those who need to understand and apply only the very basics of a subject.
•Intensive Users — those who need to understand and apply virtually everything.
As a result, most such books tend to make fundamentally simple ideas appear to be unnecessarily complex. And more complex ideas hopelessly impenetrable.
Books in “The Essential Ten Percent Series” rigorously focus on the “casual user” to ensure that simple ideas remain simple and more complex ideas can be decomposed into simpler ones.
The books in “The Essential Ten Percent” series (at March 2012) are:
College-level Writing: The Essential Ten Percent
Logical Thinking: The Essential Ten Percent
Public Speaking: The Essential Ten Percent

Like other settlers, they’d fled when Tories and Indians raided their cabin, capturing their Pa, and shocking their mother into silence.
Though the journey is often lonely and filled with misadventure, there is fun and laughter, too, especially when the three meet up with a winsome young cobbler named Remember Jones.
Told by the middle child, 13-year-old rebel Deborah, who has a secret she longs to reveal, but cannot, this is the tale of a girl coming to terms with her conscience, her imperfections, and her budding sexuality. For all three, it’s a search for love and family.

It happened in the middle of a math class.
The teacher asked a question which I knew the answer to...it was as clear as day so I decided to pluck up the courage to raise my hand.
Up to this day I’m not sure who was more excited, me for having raised my hand, or my teacher who was seeing me ready to answer a question (and open my mouth to talk) for the first time since I’d landed in her class…
“Yes, what’s the answer?” asked the teacher…
I’m sure you know the feeling of those moments when everything goes blank, a “black out” when your answer suddenly gets stuck somewhere and you’re sure that you don’t know anything and you can’t remember anything…
That’s exactly what happened to me. At that moment, when I realized that I was going to speak, I went silent; I forgot what I wanted to say.

It happened on one of the first hot days at the very beginning of the summer.
A few of us decided to ditch school – simply to walk out of the building and spend the rest of the morning by the sea!
Right from the start my body started sending me signals that this wasn’t OK…my stomach hurt me, and I ignored it, I got a thumping headache which I also ignored.
Sarah forged our teacher’s signature with incredible skill and handed us the signed notes which were our pass out of school.
We went to the gatekeeper holding our notes then, suddenly, he made a comment, one tiny remark which made us all change colors, from bright red to white and we were struck dumb…

"...I was always an outstanding athlete. I was the class champion at sprinting; my room was bursting with trophies…
This happened in grade 5. All of us still looked and sounded like young kids when I, and only I, started to develop a ‘phenomenon’:
I suddenly started to grow hairs on my arms and on my legs. This was thick black hair that you couldn’t help noticing.
I had become hairy!
It was hot outside, and the regional sports competition was coming soon. It sounded like great fun, but for me it was a nightmare.
Just the thought of our team sports kit (the shortest possible running short and a skimpy vest) made me feel sick.
I didn’t know what to do. How could I let everyone see my hairy body in those shorts, and in a sleeveless vest???"

I also wanted to help them realize how important good writing will be when they enter the workplace—especially if they choose a white-collar world where they will have to write appraisals, proposals, analyses, descriptions, recommendations, letters, reports and, of course, the inevitable emails. Students-turned-adults will not be expected to write like professionals, of course, but they will be expected to write with clarity and purpose.
In Part 1, The Big Issues, students will meet our adventurous duo, James and Jessica Davis, as they learn the key elements of planning. Too often we don't think planning is necessary; we just start writing without thinking and end up in a cloud of confusion. Although a lot of people think planning is a waste of time, it actually helps them find the words they want—and more quickly.
Once students have a plan, they can start to write. That's what Part 2, The Tools Issue, is all about. To write well, we need to learn the tools, the mechanics. Students will get plenty of practice creating examples and answers the way our lead characters do, but I doubt they will have the help of Dr. Sidney Slicer or a hip-hop robot. Yes, students will meet these oddballs inside, along with a bunch of other kooky characters like Ludwig von Mayonaze, the world's greatest guru.
Please keep in mind that I did not write this book to compete with textbooks. I wrote it for students—no matter whether they're in the fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth grade. I also wrote it for teachers who are looking for new and creative ways to help students learn to write. I realize students have to meet standards of one kind or another; that's where textbooks can help. But I also believe teachers first want to help students learn to write using the kind of universal techniques in this book--and have fun doing it.
One energetic student, Makayla, suggested that most of the stories could be adapted to short plays or skits that students can act out in the classroom. After all, this book is all about characters, dialogue, plots, suspense, humor, and drama. Oh, and writing, too.

Excerpt :
“My dear Aristibule, We would like to consult you on an issue that is cause for great concern to Us. What shall We do with the poor? They are everywhere, they spit on floors, they litter the streets and courtyards, they drink impure wine, and set a bad example for children.”
Aristibule, who had heard the word “poor,” remarked, “There are many.”
Nozé continued while Aristibule pricked up his ears. “A few years ago, We went to see the priestess of Epidaurus to ask her how to solve this problem. Do you know what the priestess told Us? She answered ‘You must,’ nothing else. What does this mean, Aristibule? We must do what? Can you explain this to Us?”
Aristibule was thinking while Nozé gargled with a sip of wheat alcohol.
“The Priestess of Epidaurus does not like long sentences,” Aristibule began.
Nozé did not give him time to finish. “If We do not punish the poor, there will be more and more!”
Aristibule was now hearing well, as the king had begun to speak very loud. He said thoughtfully, “Being poor is not very pleasant.”
“On the contrary, it is very pleasant to be poor!” exclaimed the king. “There is nothing to do, outside of remaining poor.”

Excerpt :
[Oxymoron] was the first man to add wolves and goats. Before him, a wolf plus a goat equal a wolf, which seems obvious since the wolf eats the goat. Oxymoron reformulated the problem, saying a wolf in Sparta plus a goat in Athens equal two animals. This reasoning, as soon as it was published, met with staunch opposition from the scholars of the time. It seemed inconceivable to separate animals in order to add them, and especially to put them in cities as distant and as different as Athens and Sparta. "The nature of addition is to bring together," they were saying.
This reasoning, General Aurelias and Professor Nikias did not accept either. According to their calculations, which they had just redone, a cat plus three mice equal a cat. Nikias and Aurelias however quarreled about the number of mice a cat can eat in the same meal.
- Many, claimed Aurelias.
- Not as many as a weasel, snapped Nikias.
In the face of Nikias’ protests, Aurelias added: "You know little about weasels."
