Housie Mousie and her friend Ratty set off on an adventure to find The Big Cheese Festival, and along the way, they meet some new animal friends. The beavers come to their rescue more than once and are an endearing group of friends, always there for Housie and Ratty just when they need them. They also make friends with Amy and Sam's little dog, Robin. Amy and Sam are the children who live in the old farmhouse just down the way from Housie and Ratty. Amy and Sam often help the brave rodents by giving them food and helping them survive on their adventures. The two rodent friends eventually make it to the festival only to find out that their quest doesn't end there; they become involved in uncovering some thieves who are trying to steal the big cheese for themselves. You'll have to read this story to find out if they can stop the thieves and save the day.
Opinion:
Young readers will enjoy the animal characters in this book and the beautiful illustrations in vivid colors that showcase the animals on their adventures. The added illustrations in this chapter book may also help the reader to more clearly imagine what is happening in the text of the story. Readers may also enjoy that Housie Mousie and Ratty each have an inquisitive character that is relatable to curious children who like to ask questions about the world through exploration like Housie and Ratty do in the story. It is their curiosity combined with the ability to find answers to their questions through critical thinking that allow them to figure out how to outsmart the thieves and other obstacles in their way. This story also teaches children that good friends are important and that if friends work together they can solve problems.
