Kate, Michael, and Emma Wimberly continue their adventure to find the Book of Beginnings and their lost parents. Kate now possesses the Emerald Atlas, and they are in even greater danger than before.  Dr. Prym sends them to the Edgar Allan Poe Home for Hopeless and Incorrigible Orphans so that they can be safe, or so they thought. Soon, their enemies find them.  To escape them Kate has to be separated from the others and sent back in time a hundred years to an enchanted New York.  There she meets a gang of thieves who are all orphans and a strange boy whose fate is dangerously tied to her own.

Dr. Prym, Michael, and Emma travel to South America and then further south to Antarctica to rescue the second book before Rourke finds it. Michael leads the expedition into a magical forest with tall trees.  Among these trees live elves, and their neighbor is a dragon who lives in a volcano.

Will Kate ever see Michael and Emma again or will she be lost in time forever? And will Michael and Emma get to the book before Rourke gets to it first? Who knows what would happen if he got his hands on it?

Opinion:

This book was really good and I can't wait for the next one to come out! I would go so far as to say it was better than the first book in this series.  I liked how it bounced back and forth between Kate and Michael. It keeps the energy of the book up and the reader interested.  The book is filled with action, humor, and excellent writing! You can definitely see Michael's character growth in this book, from being petty and immature to being grown up and responsible. I have no bad comments for this book and give it an easy 5 stars.  Adventure readers won’t be disappointed and, although it is a chunky book, it will be over before you know it.

Explain your content rating:

Kate likes another character. There is a small kiss or two. One of the elves falls in love with Michael and gives him a kiss.
