LitPick Review
The Way Back From Broken is about a boy named Rakmen. His little sister has died, his parents are close to getting a divorce, and he’s likely going to end up flunking out of high school. His mother goes to the Promise House which is a support group. He goes along even though he doesn’t want to.
There, he meets a ten-year-old named Jacey. There was a death in her family as well, and as a result, she’s now at the Promise House. Jacey and her mother ask Rakmen to come with them to go canoeing and camping. He feels forced by his parents to go with them. Will Rakmen be able to handle eight weeks of canoeing and camping? Will he be able to find a way back from broken?
Opinion:
I thought this book was okay. I found the beginning didn't hold my attention; it took a while for the plot to pick up. I didn’t like some of the characters, either. One of the children in the story constantly went to Rakmen, believing he was like some kind of superman. I didn’t like that aspect of the story.
However, I found the ending of the story very sweet and touching. Once I got past the beginning, I found the rest of the story to be powerful and inspirational. The ending was my favorite part. The Way Back From Broken was an amazing story.
