Mary Magdelene is a young girl living with her family. They do sardine packing, and are fairly middle class. When Mary's family asks her to marry, she is overjoyed. But then a fever takes the lives of her father and her betrothed. Mary'solder brother finds her another husband, but this one is not so satisfactory. Mary learns "tricks" from a wise woman to help her bear her troubles in that terrible household. Marysoon kills her husband when she becomes evil and demented by spirits. Will Mary ever rid herself of the spirits?
