Mary Magdelene is a young girl living with her family. They do sardine packing, and are fairly middle class. When Mary's family asks her to marry, she is overjoyed. But then a fever takes the lives of her father and her betrothed. Mary'solder brother finds her another husband, but this one is not so satisfactory. Mary learns "tricks" from a wise woman to help her bear her troubles in that terrible household. Marysoon kills her husband when she becomes evil and demented by spirits. Will Mary ever rid herself of the spirits? And will she ever find her place in the world after all she has faced?

Opinion:

This was a well thought out book with lots of details. But it never quite told me the setting, which left me scratching my head quite a bit.It would be a book for readers who are curious about religion and hardship. I liked how the book was often from many different people's point ofview. It was fascinating to learn about the people of old. I also thought the author did a good job of describing how different people felt about the main character being demented by spirits. I would say it is only a one time read.
