Nathan has a terrible day at school, but weird Abigail, who never talked to anyone and sat at the table of the doomed, tells Nathan about a formula her uncle created called Hurt-Be-Gone. It was supposed to make you have no bad feelings and no worries, but everything went totally wrong, when he gets splashed with Hurt-Be-Gone, and Abigail's uncle gets arrested. A few days later, Nathan notices he can't get hurt, he can't get hungry or digest his food, or run out of breath. Nathan, Abigail, and his friend Mookie, are on their own to try to find a cure for Nathan.

Jack is a farm boy, but the dust bowl has taken all the crops away. The rain has disappeared. His sister, Dorothy, is very sick. Jack's father thinks he is a good for nothing little boy and never accepts help from him. Then, one night in the old Talbot barn, blinding light shines from inside of it. Jack goes to explore. There he finds a creature with a face that looks like rain, or rather, The Storm King. Also, in the barn, he finds a bag full of thunder. Eventually, he saves the day and it rains again after years and years of drought.

On her 13th birthday, she receives a mysterious package and when she opens it, dangerous fireworks go off and she is knocked out. When she wakes up, she finds Gigi's old key and three leprechauns in her bedroom who capture her and take her to their (the Greens) land where she is to become the keeper of their gold like Gigi had done before her.

One evening, her parents disappear along with all of the other ghosts. Her dad had said that the doors were closing. The world felt empty without the ghosts. She learned that ghosts sent them dreams and prevented accidents. Her and this rotten but very smart kid named Steve go through a red door with the number 73 on it. This is the door to the other side.
