Those Darn Stripes by Tyrel Nelson is a nonfiction book that captures the photographic life of Nelson, the author.  With his camera, he captures beautiful moments. Apart from that, he loves to explore various parts of the world, where he takes photos of events and people for memory-keeping.

Growing up, Tyrel Nelson's father played a major role in his life. The two built a very strong bond and a healthy relationship which seemed to be going well until the devastating news that struck them. It was the kind of news that brought about shock and was bound to leave a scar on Nelson's heart. What kind of news was that? And how did it affect Nelson?

Opinion:

One thing I sincerely appreciated about this book was the colorful, high-quality photos that I found while reading. All of these photos amounted to 25, and they included photos of events, places, and even nature itself. To Nelson, photography is like a hobby, and he did not waste any time documenting photographic memories that will last a lifetime.  These photos brought out the old memories, and occasionally, he would reflect on them. For instance, he always goes back to the picture of his dad's favorite tree, which he took on the last day of walking with him. Whenever he views the picture, it reminds him to always appreciate the little things in life.

Another thing I loved about the book was how the author described his dad even though the book was primarily focused on him (the author).  While reading, I could feel that strong bond between them, and even when his father Jay was sick, Nelson couldn't help himself. He was deeply saddened at the fact that his father had a short time to live.

The book was emotional and relatable to me as a reader. For instance, when Nelson's father died, I really felt the pain. For a moment, I could not continue to read and had to pause to recover.  But apart from the emotional sadness, there were also times Nelson felt happy, like his first meeting with Alyssa, his wife. It was one of the best things that happened in his life, and whenever he thinks of it, it always makes him glad. She was like heaven sent to him, and she stayed by his side even during his most difficult times.

The characters in the book made the book more interesting since I was able to read about them from Nelson's perspective. Jay, mentioned earlier, was a caring and loving man. Apart from being just a father to Nelson, he was more of a best friend. The two were really close, and they confided in each other.  Another character mentioned was Alyssa. After his girlfriend left him, Nelson was devastated until he met Alyssa. The two had a chat, and he saw her as an easygoing person. Soon, they were in a relationship and even when Alyssa's job as a medical personnel took most of her time, Nelson still waited eagerly for her return from work.

Overall, the book was intriguing to me as a reader, and even though it had some layers of emotion which were soul-stirring, it still captivated my heart.  I would like to recommend this book to readers and fans of nonfiction books, and also to adults and young adults who are interested in inspirational books.
